Which at home chemical peel is best and the right one for me?

Chemical peels are effective for anti aging skin care (wrinkles, lines, crow's feet, dull skin tones), to improve acne and acne scars, minimize pores, loosen blackheads, improve sun damaged skin, improve the appearance of stretch marks, fade age spots and general hyperpigmentation, to rejuvenate and improve the tone and texture of your skin. Doing your chemical peel at home is convenient and cost effective.  The best home chemical peel is the one which most specifically targets your problem.  See all of our peels,  below, and the problems they best target.

What *is* a chemical peel, how does it work:

Chemical peels are "controlled burns" that either, gently or more aggressively", remove dead surface skill cells and debris from the epidermis, and with deeper peels, can help to diminish visible skin issues that begin more deeply into the skin.  Chemical peels, when properly chosen, can refine your skin texture and skin tone by refining the look of pores, fine lines, wrinkles, scars and discoloration.  Chemical peels can help your skin to look younger and more luminous.  Some chemical peels will simply exfoliate without visible peeling (superficial, light peels)... others will provide varying degrees of peeling (medium, deep), dependent upon your skin type and the strength and type of peel.  Below is a guide that will help provide further education into chemical peels. 

How to choose the at home chemical peel that is right for you (click onto the category, in blue, to see specific products on Makeup Artist's Choice, MUAC):

Mandelic Acid:  An alpha hydroxy acid derived from the bitter almond nut. This is a gentle acid which exfoliates the skin with very little topical discomfort. Excellent for inhibiting the formation of brown spots, and hyperpigmentation. Will not cause unwanted lightening of the skin in darker skin tones. Improve acne, melasma, sun damaged skin, large pores, blackheads, wrinkles, dull, sallow skin.  Our 25% Mandelic Aid peel will cause little-to-no peeling, while our 40% may cause some light flaking for most clients. Contraindications: Do not use if you have nut allergies.

Lactic Acid:  Milder than glycolic acid, and typically better for working on hyper pigmentation problems, our formulation contains licorice extract, an effective skin lightening additive. Appropriate for dry skin or oily skin. An alpha hydroxy acid, this is a great "first peel" for oily, dry, normal and sensitive skin types. The inherent properties of this peel make it ideal for clients with uneven skin tones and general hyper pigmentation.  Some light flaking in most cases that becomes more visible as you increase the strength. Contraindications: Do no use if you have milk allergies.

Glycolic Acid:  A bit more aggressive than lactic acids, this is also an alpha hydroxy peel and will exfoliate the outer layers of your skin.  Glycolic acid is a good all-around acid for normal-oily skin types to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin, as well as addressing the issues of acne, acne scarring, wrinkles and fine lines.  30% typically rapidly exfoliates the skin without much visible peeling/flaking... stronger glycolic acid peels may cause visible peeling.  The stronger the glycolic acid peel, the more flaking or peeling you may see.

Phytic Acid:  A superficial peel with exfoliating properties. Desirable for skin types that cannot tolerate AHA's. Derived from rice, this product is excellent for anti aging, skin smoothing, brightening, Melasma and general discolorations. Acne clients will see improved skin clearing. Those with PIH (post inflammatory hyper pigmentation) will see excellent results.

Salicylic Acid (beta hydroxy):  Oil soluble, thus making these acids perfect for oily/acne skin that needs deep pore cleansing and loosening of blackheads. Use this as a "first-step" when using alpha hydroxy acid peels to remove oils from the skin, or use alone 3-4 times per week for oil/blackhead control. A beta-hydroxy, this acid penetrates the upper layers of the epidermis only. For a stronger application, use our 15% salicylic acid peel once a week. Contraindications: Do not use if you have allergies to aspirin products.

Radiance Peel:  combination peel combining both alpha and beta hydroxy acids with more natural/organic origins. Excellent skin exfoliation, skin brightening, deep pore cleaning and reduction, skin texture refinement, alleviate sun damage, minor melasma and discolorations, smooths uneven skin tones, softens lines, wrinkles.

TCA:  Deeper peeling class of acids excellent for improving the look of acne, lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, stretch marks, sun damage, lip lines, age spots and general scarring. Longer lasting results, more intensive.  Not advised for darker skin tones, as it may cause unwanted skin darkening.  Please consult with our skin care professionals to determine which strength would be best for you.

TCX:  We formulated this peel with a proprietary blend of acids to work on a number of skin care issues by including the following acids:  Mandelic Acid, Salicylic Acid, TCA, Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Citric Acid, Phytic Acid.  Total acid content is 30%.  Great for acne, softening of acne scars, anti aging benefits, fading of skin discolorations.  Consider this your all-in-one peel.  Contraindications:  Do not use if you have allergies to milk, aspirin, or nuts.

Jessner:  A peel that is layered until it frosts, it contains alpha and beta hydroxies along with resorcinol. This peel is ideal for clients with cystic acne and will produce very visible peeling for most clients. Contraindications:  Do not use if you have allergies to aspirin products.

Non Acid Enzyme Peels:  All natural enzymes safely dissolve surface skin debris and leave skin feeling soft, cleansed and refreshed. Our enzyme peels are professional strength, exactly what you would get in a very high-end salon. Use enzymes if you have sensitive skin that is non-tolerant of acid usage.
